Die Betriebssportgemeinschaft Stahl Freital (kurz BSG Stahl Freital genannt) entstand am 17. Februar 1951 durch die Umbenennung der bisherigen BSG Stahl- und Hüttenwerke Freital-Döhlen.
Am 17. November 1991 wurde die BSG Stahl Freital in den TV Stahl Freital umgewandelt. Die Abteilung Fußball der BSG Stahl Freital machte sich bereits am 27. Juni 1990 als SV Blau-Weiß Freital selbstständig.
